| Description | Frequency |
Definition: Hypoplastic is the adjective from of Hypoplasia, meaning incomplete or arrested development of an organ or a part. Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome is therefore the underdevelopment of the left ventricle of the heart. The image below (© University of Kansas) shows a normal heart alongside a hypoplastic left heart (click to enlarge). |
HLHS can sometimes be diagnosed in utero, although it is generally undetected before birth. The primary symptom of HLHS at birth is a dangerously low blood oxygen saturation level. |
